The suburbs were created, urban sprawl increased, and U.S. car culture was born. Over time, these trends accelerated, car ownership increased, and the interstate was created. For eleven straight years the America’s Transportation Awards competition sponsored by AASHTO, Socrata, AAA and the US Chamber of Commerce has showcased the very best transportation projects in nation. This video highlights the 2018 competition which attracted 79 project nominations from 35 state DOTs. 12 projects earned the right to compete for the grand prize and the Socrata People’s Choice Award. The top two prizes and $10,000 cash awards—to be given to a charity or transportation-related scholarship program of the winner’s choosing–were presented Sept. 24, 2018 at the AASHTO Annual Meeting in Atlanta.

In recent years, the vehicles of transportation network companies (TNCs) such as Uber and Lyft have become ubiquitous in San Francisco and many other major cities. Worldwide, the total number of rides on Uber and Lyft grew from an estimated 190 million in 2014 to over 2 billion by mid-2016. In San Francisco, this agency (the San Francisco County Transportation Authority or SFCTA) estimated approximately 62 million TNC trips in late 2016, comprising about 15% of all intra-San Francisco vehicle trips and 9% of all intra-San Francisco person trips that fall.

One-third of the nation’s major urban roadways – highways and major streets that are the main routes for commuters and commerce – are in poor condition. These critical links in the nation’s transportation system carry 70 percent of the approximately 3.2 trillion miles driven annually in America. Road conditions could deteriorate even further as the rate of vehicle travel continues to increase and local and state governments find they are unable to adequately fund road repairs.

The auto industry stands on the brink of a revolution. By 2030, vehicle production will have split between mass-market, largely no-frills “cars on demand” that will be rented journey-by-journey and more customized vehicles for those who still want to drive, or be driven in, their own vehicle. A high level of automation will be needed to produce both types of vehicles, and every process will be affected. The pressure on the workforce will be severe. The industry workforce will be cut by at least 50 percent by 2030, and employees who remain will need very different skills. Automakers must become data managers and mobility service providers as well as vehicle assemblers.

According to the latest HNTB Corporation America THINKS public opinion survey, Americans report congestion is noticeably worse today than just one year ago. They know improvements to our transportation infrastructure will help reduce congestion. They know funding is needed to pay for those improvements. And, they are willing to pay higher taxes and tolls to build and maintain a high quality, reliable and sustainable transportation system.

This study examines the funding and condition of Michigan’s roads and bridges and presents policy recommendations regarding them. The first section of this study describes the different types of roads in Michigan, which government entity is responsible for each type and their current estimated condition. The section after that explains how road funding works. The next section then discusses how public goods such as roads should be priced and funded, based on standard economic theory. It also attempts to measure the level to which Michigan’s roads are underpriced and underfunded. The final section concludes with some policy recommendations.
