For eleven straight years the America’s Transportation Awards competition sponsored by AASHTO, Socrata, AAA and the US Chamber of Commerce has showcased the very best transportation projects in nation. This video highlights the 2018 competition which attracted 79 project nominations from 35 state DOTs. 12 projects earned the right to compete for the grand prize and the Socrata People’s Choice Award. The top two prizes and $10,000 cash awards—to be given to a charity or transportation-related scholarship program of the winner’s choosing–were presented Sept. 24, 2018 at the AASHTO Annual Meeting in Atlanta.

In recent years, the vehicles of transportation network companies (TNCs) such as Uber and Lyft have become ubiquitous in San Francisco and many other major cities. Worldwide, the total number of rides on Uber and Lyft grew from an estimated 190 million in 2014 to over 2 billion by mid-2016. In San Francisco, this agency (the San Francisco County Transportation Authority or SFCTA) estimated approximately 62 million TNC trips in late 2016, comprising about 15% of all intra-San Francisco vehicle trips and 9% of all intra-San Francisco person trips that fall.

One-third of the nation’s major urban roadways – highways and major streets that are the main routes for commuters and commerce – are in poor condition. These critical links in the nation’s transportation system carry 70 percent of the approximately 3.2 trillion miles driven annually in America. Road conditions could deteriorate even further as the rate of vehicle travel continues to increase and local and state governments find they are unable to adequately fund road repairs.
