It shows crews at work behind the SR 99 tunneling machine’s cutterhead during a planned maintenance stop in spring 2016. To stabilize soil and water that would otherwise flow through openings in the cutterhead, crews must pump compressed air into their work space at the front end of the machine.

Seattle, WA: Fixing the Tunneling Machine

Wednesday, February 19th, 2014

This video shows a short clip of a worker replacing a cutting tool inside the SR 99 tunneling machine in January 2014. Crews working for Seattle Tunnel Partners (STP), WSDOT’s contractor for the SR 99 Tunnel Project, changed a number of tools during 158 hours of recent inspections performed under hyperbaric conditions. Tunneling experts now believe that the clogs and other factors contributed to the stoppage of tunneling on Dec. 6, 2013. As the project’s design-build contractor, it is STP’s responsibility to determine the best and most expedient way to resume tunneling.
