Seattle, WA: Fly Through the Entire SR 99 Tunnel

Tuesday, October 24th, 2017

Now that the tunneling machine Bertha’s work is complete, it’s possible to fly a drone with a video camera from end-to-end inside Seattle’s SR 99 tunnel. In two minutes, you’ll see two miles of ongoing construction work. The upper roadway of the tunnel’s double-deck highway is more than 85% complete. Up next? Installation of the lower roadway, and all the systems it takes to operate a modern tunnel.

Seattle, WA: Workers Inside the SR 99 Tunneling Machine

Tuesday, July 5th, 2016

This video was provided by Ballard Marine Construction, the firm in charge of managing and performing hyperbaric work on the SR 99 Tunnel Project in Seattle. It shows crews at work behind the SR 99 tunneling machine’s cutterhead during a planned maintenance stop in spring 2016. To stabilize soil and water that would otherwise flow through openings in the cutterhead, crews must pump compressed air into their work space at the front end of the machine.

Seattle, WA: Tunneling Under the Alaskan Way Viaduct

Tuesday, May 10th, 2016

After nearly a week of tunneling under the Alaskan Way Viaduct, crews are steadily continuing Bertha’s underground drive towards downtown Seattle. This video gives you a behind-the-scenes glimpse into how the new tunnel is being built, showcasing the complex operations involved in this project. Massive concrete ring segments are transported to Bertha’s segment erector where they are lifted into place, allowing the machine to push forward while the excavated soil is transported along a network of conveyer belts and into a barge moored at Elliott Bay’s Pier 46.

Tunnel Trouble: Crumbling Infrastructure Is Putting the NYC Metro Region at Risk

Tuesday, November 10th, 2015

The tri-state area is loaded with bridges, rail systems and roadways that are suffering from years of under-investment. But perhaps the biggest risk we face is with the rail tunnel linking New Jersey and New York. Built more than a century ago, the fraying tubes that carry NJ Transit and Amtrak trains are the biggest chokepoint in the Northeast, and the source of frequent delays for commuters. For years, the tunnels have needed extended repairs that are impossible to do while keeping trains running. The situation deteriorated when the tunnels flooded with salt water during Hurricane Sandy. Amtrak officials say the tubes might not last 20 years.

Seattle, WA: Fixing the Tunneling Machine

Wednesday, February 19th, 2014

This video shows a short clip of a worker replacing a cutting tool inside the SR 99 tunneling machine in January 2014. Crews working for Seattle Tunnel Partners (STP), WSDOT’s contractor for the SR 99 Tunnel Project, changed a number of tools during 158 hours of recent inspections performed under hyperbaric conditions. Tunneling experts now believe that the clogs and other factors contributed to the stoppage of tunneling on Dec. 6, 2013. As the project’s design-build contractor, it is STP’s responsibility to determine the best and most expedient way to resume tunneling.

Fueled by Tolling, Innovation Stems from Our Local Communities

Tuesday, April 9th, 2013

The International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA)
The funding crunch facing America’s transportation infrastructure has made it crucial for our cities, counties, states and regions to find innovative ways of funding our mobility. The Federal Highway Trust Fund – the federal government’s primary source of investment in local infrastructure – is running dry, with the gas tax losing much of its purchasing power since its last increase over two decades ago.
