We thought with the newest NYC DOT data showing bicycling at an all-time high, it would be great time to ask bicyclists why they are riding their bikes more. Interestingly, the answers seemed to be grouped in three different categories: it is safer, it is healthy and MTA is falling apart.

The Pulaski Bridge had become dangerously congested over the last few years as more and more bikes, pedestrians and runners have crammed on to its narrow shared path. The solution? Remove one lane of the roadway and give the space to a bi-directional cycle track giving the older combo lane to the exclusive use of pedestrians.

A few months ago, I was in Austin, Texas for the NACTO 2015 Summit. Although I was quite busy and we got hit with a major rainstorm of epic proportions, I was able to shoot enough video to put together a limited look at what is going on in the city. Even more fortunate, soon after the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) named Austin their 22nd Gold status bike city near the end of 2015, making Austin the first city in Texas to claim the honor.

In October, NACTO held their 4th annual “Designing Cities” conference with a record 650+ attendees from all over the world. This year’s event was in Austin, Texas which showcased many of the recent transportation improvements the city has done, including the new 3rd Street protected cycle track…As usual the event focussed on what people can learn from best practices in cities all over the United States & the world featuring plenary speakers such as Janette Sadik-Khan and Philadelphia Mayor Micheal Nutter as well as panels, city tours and the NACTO Camp which is an unconference which allows attendees to propose their own topics for discussion.

Earlier this year, 1st Street in Washington D.C. was transformed into a protected bike lane with a myriad of separation techniques that all seem to work very well and feel incredibly safe. About half the lane is done with concrete median prortection while other sections are done with green paint, plastic bollards and armadillos which seem to prevent traffic from encroaching on the lane. What is truly impressive is the now much more the narrow streets deliberatly funnel traffic more slowly and lead to a street that feels welcome in a Vision Zero world.

A crowd estimated at 1,000 people strong gathered in Union Square yesterday evening to remember victims of traffic violence and call for preventive action at the Vision Zero Vigil, organized by Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets.
The message was simple: Traffic crashes and the suffering they cause are preventable. We can’t accept life-altering injuries and the deaths of loved ones as unavoidable “accidents.” Robin Urban Smith was there to capture it for Streetfilms.
Urban density is fundamental principle of sustainable development. Density supports economic and creative vibrancy, social integration, and a healthy, environmental sustainable development model. As the world’s population continues to urbanize, our cities have two options for growth: densify or sprawl. The private-car dependent sprawl model of the 20th century must change, and move away from a reliance on private cars, to accommodate a more populous, and more prosperous world.

Here in NYC, there has been an intrepid battle fought by many groups and Queens leaders to improve 111th Street, a dangerous speedway to cross for pedestrians and cyclists. In April, NYC DOT, working from results of a Vision Zero workshop spearheaded by Make the Road and Transportation Alternatives, presented to Queens Community Board 4 a smart proposal to put 111th Street on a road diet, add a two-way bike lane, and make the pedestrian crossings safer for the copious numbers of families, children and seniors going to Flushing-Corona Park & The Hall of Science.
