As the findings make clear, when New Yorkers are left stranded on the subway platform or stuck in a tunnel, they are missing classes and job interviews and doctor’s appointments. They are running late to pick up or drop off their children or care for elderly relatives. They are losing wages and putting their jobs in jeopardy. In short, when subway performance declines, so too does the health, financial security, and quality of life of everyday New Yorkers.

Innovative upgrades helped double this waste water plant’s wet-weather processing capacity to 720 million gallons per day, while increasing sediment and grit removal to 92 percent and reducing odor. To reduce discharges into the East River, the project team utilized advanced 4D modeling technology to deliver four new treatment components— totaling $1.3 billion—and inspected the interiors of eight, 140-foot-high egg-shaped anaerobic digesters that sit atop the plant. They also implemented a biogas program that is expected to heat nearly 5,200 homes and reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by more than 90,000 metric tons by the end of this year.

“Interesting fact: two thirds of the people that used to travel between Washington and New York used to travel by the shuttle, by air, and a third by rail; and now the numbers are reversed: it’s two thirds by Amtrak or other regional rail and a third by air, and I think that speaks to the resurgence in rail. And I think also increasing numbers of travelers are interested in being responsible commuters, whether it’s a trip across the Hudson or a trip to Washington, and I think that influences their choice of commute and travel as well.”

The Peconic Estuary Program is using EPA’s publication, “Being Prepared for Climate Change: A Workbook for Developing Risk-Based Adaptation Plans” to create a risk-based climate change vulnerability assessment. This video describes some climate change impacts that are already affecting eastern Long Island. Local people explain why they are conducting the assessment and describe some of the ways they are starting to respond to climate change risks.

The tri-state area is loaded with bridges, rail systems and roadways that are suffering from years of under-investment. But perhaps the biggest risk we face is with the rail tunnel linking New Jersey and New York. Built more than a century ago, the fraying tubes that carry NJ Transit and Amtrak trains are the biggest chokepoint in the Northeast, and the source of frequent delays for commuters. For years, the tunnels have needed extended repairs that are impossible to do while keeping trains running. The situation deteriorated when the tunnels flooded with salt water during Hurricane Sandy. Amtrak officials say the tubes might not last 20 years.

The CDTC New Visions 2040 Plan includes a set of principles to guide transportation planning and investment in the region for coming years. It also articulates a series of short-range and long-range recommendations and actions to help achieve broad regional goals, and provided an innovative budget approach to ensure implementation of the plan.
Plattsburgh International Airport is currently undergoing a $55 Million Dollar expansion. The airport will remain operational during the expected 2 year construction project. Travelers are reminded to plan accordingly, allowing extra travel time for arrival at the airport.
