Helena, MT: Redeveloping Brownfields

Laura Erikson, Community Development Coordinator in Lewis and Clark County, MT discusses how EPA is making a visible difference in Helena, MT. EPA Brownfields funds were used by the County to investigate contamination at a site that was regarded as the most blighted property in town. After completing the environmental assessment, the Montana Business Assistance Connection, with help from the City and EPA, was able to purchase the site and restore it to residential use standards. Today it is ready for redevelopment. Ms. Erikson explains what the newly cleaned site will mean for the community, calling it a “catalyst” that will benefit the whole area.

Montana DOT Timelapse: How a Bridge is Built

A Montana Department of Transportation bridge replacement project received honors in the 2015 America’s Transportation Awards competition. The announcement Wednesday was made at the 2015 Western Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials annual meeting. The project, “Deep Creek Canyon Weekend Bridge Replacement” won in the Best Use of Innovation category for the WASHTO region.

“… the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) is awarding $8 billion to states across the country to develop America’s first nationwide program of high-speed intercity passenger rail service. Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), these dollars represent an historic investment in the country’s transportation infrastructure, which will help create jobs and transform travel in America.”
