Washington State DOT: Bike-Friendly Washington
Friday, June 30th, 2017Guest on The Infra Blog: Martha Roskowski, Vice President of Local Innovation, PeopleForBikes
Tuesday, June 21st, 2016Martha Roskowski directs PeopleForBikes’ Green Lane Project, jumpstarting protected bike lanes and low-cost street retrofits in U.S. cities. Martha enjoys being part of the PeopleForBikes team and the way protected bike lanes turn a busy street into a comfortable and inviting place to ride.
“…What’s happening is there’s this realization that if you provide people with safe and comfortable places to ride by creating protected bike lanes on big, busy streets, by connecting them to completely separated pathways and side streets where the volume and speed of traffic is low, that people will ride. So they’re not crazy to not be out there on the streets today. The good news is that there’s rapid progress. In transportation terms there’s pretty rapid progress toward retrofitting streets to provide those spaces where people feel safe, and they are safe.”

Friday, December 30th, 2011Uploaded by GNYBerlin on Youtube
Ghost Bikes can be found all over Brooklyn, New York City and most of the world. They are memorials to bicyclists who have been killed on the street.
A bike painted white is locked to a permanent fixture at the nearest location to the actual crash – oftentimes there is a plague with the cyclist’s name. It is a somber reminder of that individual person who died and a call to make our streets safer for everyone.

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011LOS ANGELES COUNTY BICYCLE COALITION
There are many high-density urban areas in Los Angeles County with large numbers of transit -dependent residents and high rates of walking and bicycle usage, yet they tend to contain much fewer, if any, bicycle facilities. Not surprisingly, data extrapolated from the TIMS database created by SafeTrec at UC Berkeley shows disproportionately higher concentrations of pedestrian and bicycle crashes in low-income areas than in more affluent areas.
BICYCLING ACCESS AND EGRESS TO TRANSIT: INFORMING THE POSSIBILITIES
Friday, April 29th, 2011MINETA TRANSPORTATION INSTITUTE
Increasingly, bicycling and transit are receiving attention in planning circles in their own right. Many countries are experiencing rising levels of cycling and available reports of transit ridership suggest that the United States had the highest transit patronage in 52 years in absolute terms in 2008 despite falling gas prices. Several studies suggest that the growth in both modes may in small part be a result of the integration of the two modes.
League of American Bicyclists: RESCISSIONS AND RESTORATION
Thursday, April 21st, 2011LEAGUE OF AMERICAN BICYCLISTS
Rescissions are essentially a book keeping measure when properly administered. It allows USDOT to recoup unspent funds. However, some state DOTs have turned into an opportunity to gut neglected bicycle and pedestrian funding sources in order to preserve favored programs.
Dear Chicago: Make biking, walking safer
Friday, April 1st, 2011If you’ve ever ventured out into one of Chicago’s famous six-corner intersections, you know the streets don’t always feel safe. The facts bear this out. In 2009 there were over 4,500 crashes between Chicago drivers and pedestrians or cyclists, 35 of which were fatal. This is according to the Illinois Department of Transportation, which tracks traffic statistics.

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011This innovative, pilot project will create the first separated bikeway in Southern California, in Downtown Long Beach along Broadway and 3rd Streets — between Alamitos Avenue and Golden Avenue.
This will create an attractive transportation alternative for travel into downtown, including the 79 percent of downtown workers who drive alone to work each day. It also creates a more livable environment for the increasing number of residents who make downtown their home.
