On a chilly day, nearly 75 people turned out to support NYC DOT’s installation of a protected bike lane along a very dangerous stretch of Northern Boulevard which is used frequently by families, children and commuters to get to a highly popular recreation path called Joe Michael’s Mile in Eastern Queens.
The 8 mile loop showed off some lanes nearly completed while others in the process of being installed. Of late the project has been in the media with objections from residents and some politicians that it is too dangerous to implement and the lanes should be removed and are dangerous for drivers.
But the object of the lanes is safety. The rampant speeding and bad driving along the stretch has caused death and many injuries over the years to cyclists and pedestrians. The highest profile case being that of bike rider Michael Schenkman, 78, who was riding on Northern Boulevard to get to the greenway to get his daily exercise. It was his death that motivated advocates and neighborhood leaders to change conditions on Northern.
