Interactive Map: Transit Funding Cuts Across the Country

Public transportation ridership is at record highs, according to Transportation for America, but transportation agencies across the country are making service cuts, layoffs, and fare increases. T4A’s interactive map shows the cuts in various transit systems across the country. Along with current budget deficits, it displays other useful data like total number of riders, fare increases, and service changes. T4A also allows users to join the action by sharing their transit experiences for an upcoming congressional lobbying campaign.

Transportation TV: 10,000 Recovery Projects Underway

President Obama holds a news conference to break ground on the 10,000th Recovery highway project. We’ll take you to Ohio, for the big event. This week also marks the first anniversary of the tragic METRO Rail crash near the nation’s Capitol. Several U.S. Senators held a news conference calling for tough, federal regulation of the nation’s transit systems. We’ll also tell you about a memorial service held to remember the nine victims who died in last year when the two METRO trains collided. And several members of Congress took a ride with U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood this week, down Pennsylvania Avenue.

Boston Rising: Boston Bikes’ Nicole Freedman

The Boston metro area has always had plenty of cyclists. But other than some fantastic greenways like the Minuteman Trail, riding along the Charles, and some ahead-of-its-time traffic calming & bike lanes in Cambridge, cyclists have had very little to crow about. In fact, it wasn’t uncommon to hear murmurs that Boston was the worst cycling city in the U.S.
