REGIONAL PLAN ASSOCIATION
The most widely accepted definition of “sustainability” comes from the United Nations’ Brundtland Commission 1987 report “Our Common Future.” They define sustainable development as “… development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” This is obviously an extremely broad concept – at some level, it touches on everything relating to land-use and planning.
RECONNECTING AMERICA
The past few months have been an exciting time as large and small communities, representing all corners of the country, have worked on developing collaborative planning processes that will address the unique conditions in their region and which will improve the quality of life for the diverse people that live, work and play there…The impetus for this has been competition for grants springing from the unprecedented partnership announced last year between the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency.
This video explores population growth issues in Baton Rouge. By illustrating potential scenarios in which the region can support policies that attract and retain young people, increase connectivity and transportation choices, and create a more livable region.

Minnesota needs a transportation system that is safer, enhances and preserves communities, and saves families and businesses money through greater reliance on public transit, bicycling, and walking, and better maintenance of the infrastructure we already have. Transportation is about much more than getting from A to B. It is not an end, but it should be a means for a community to achieve broader goals of economic development, neighborhood revitalization, and environmental sustainability.

Sam Schwartz has nearly 40 years of experience in the field of Transportation Engineering and Traffic Safety. He is considered a worldwide authority in traffic, highway, bridge, transit and parking systems. He was New York City’s traffic commissioner and the chief engineer for highways, bridges, ferries and other New York City infrastructure. Schwartz specializes in development of urban traffic programs utilizing his expert knowledge in traffic demand management, transit systems management, traffic calming and transportation planning and engineering. He has been in the vanguard of Intelligent Transportation Systems development and wrote the seminal paper, Intelligent Traffic, which received the International Institute of Transportation Award in 1985. Schwartz is also the author of Gridlock Sam, a popular New York Daily News column addressing traffic matters in New York City. His links with multimedia networks are extensive, spanning radio, television and the internet.
View this complete post...The City of Austin has scheduled a $90 million mobility bond election for Nov. 2, 2010 (Early voting begins Monday, Oct. 18.) The proposed projects are both short-term and long-term to address City mobility issues, including investments in streets, sidewalks, bike paths, trails and transit infrastructure in all parts of Austin.

Andrew Herrmann, P.E., SECB, F.ASCE, is President-Elect of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for 2011. He will be inaugurated in late October at ASCE’s 140th Annual Conference in Las Vegas and will succeed to the Presidency in 2012. He is a Principal of Hardesty & Hanover, LLP, a transportation consulting engineering firm founded in 1887 and headquartered in New York City.

On Labor Day, President Obama announced a bold plan to renew and expand America’s infrastructure.
