BROOKINGS-ROCKEFELLER PROJECT ON STATE AND METROPOLITAN INNOVATION
A 21st century state transportation strategy that strengthens metropolitan America and is tightly linked to the vital elements of the next economy is critical for our nation to emerge from the rubble of the recession. Yet state transportation systems face two overarching challenges: they are both broke and broken.

…two in three voters say that making improvements in infrastructure is very important, and most voters say that in its current state the nation’s transportation system is barely adequate. Voters seek better and safer roads and more public transportation options, widely agreeing that the United States would benefit from an expanded and improved public transportation system.

In this latest installment, MDOT’s Andy Bennett describes the process MDOT is using to crush removed pavement and recycle it into the base course of pavement that is being newly constructed.

THE ROAD INFORMATION PROGRAM
The most needed surface transportation improvements in Virginia include 36 projects to build, expand or modernize highways, six projects to improve public transit and eight projects to improve the state’s rail system. These improvements would enhance economic development opportunities throughout the state by increasing mobility and freight movement, easing congestion and making Virginia an attractive place to live, visit and do business.
The ice was so thick the plows helped break it up and thin it out so the mag chloride treatment would work faster. TxDOT crews all across Texas have been on the job operating in 12 hour shifts since January 31, 2011.

TRI-STATE TRANSPORTATION CAMPAIGN
The most dangerous places for people to walk are wide, high‐speed roads designed to move as many cars as fast as possible, with little if any consideration for pedestrians. In New Jersey, downstate New York, and Connecticut, nearly two‐thirds of regional pedestrian fatalities occur on multi‐lane thoroughfares known as arterials, like the Burlington Pike running along the New Jersey side of the Delaware River, and the Hempstead Turnpike bisecting Nassau County.

View this complete post...This innovative, pilot project will create the first separated bikeway in Southern California, in Downtown Long Beach along Broadway and 3rd Streets — between Alamitos Avenue and Golden Avenue.
This will create an attractive transportation alternative for travel into downtown, including the 79 percent of downtown workers who drive alone to work each day. It also creates a more livable environment for the increasing number of residents who make downtown their home.
