There will be a new resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in about 14 months, and no matter who that person is, infrastructure will be on the agenda. No matter how you measure it, U.S. infrastructure investment is falling behind the country’s needs and the rest of the world. The needs are so big that it begs a question: where would a new President start? So the infrastructure consulting firm of CG LA pulled in an entire group of infrastructure experts throughout the country–including several who work with McGraw Hill Financial–to put together a list of infrastructure priorities and the means of making them reality.

Blueprint 2025: How the Next President Should Handle Infrastructure
Tuesday, December 8th, 2015A Requiem for the Highway Trust Fund
Tuesday, December 8th, 2015Innovation Newsbriefs
Vol. 26, No. 8
The FAST Act, signed by the President on December 4, marks the beginning of the end for the Highway Trust Fund as we have known it. The $305 billion 5-year measure draws heavily on general funds (to the tune of $70 billion), and relegates to a virtual anachronism the “user pays” principle that was the philosophic foundation of the federal-aid highway program for the past 60 years.

Tuesday, December 1st, 2015THE NEW CLIMATE ECONOMY
Despite this mounting evidence of the costs of fossil fuel subsidies, and the potential virtuous cycles that could result from their removal, governments are often reticent to undertake reform. Researchers have identified several specific reasons for the persistence of subsidies. Some of these are explicit, such as a lack of information, while others are implicit, driven by special interests.
Decreasing Driving Miles in Massachusetts To Save Lives, Money, Injuries, and the Environment

TRANSPORTATION FOR MASSACHUSETTS
The benefits of reduced driving are sometimes difficult to see, but hugely important. Many dramatic gains remain unrecognized because they are indirect, gradual, or result from avoided collisions and health problems that people don’t expect will happen to them in the first place. In our daily lives, it is difficult to assess the value of reduced costs that would have been borne by others or consequences that didn’t occur.

Wednesday, November 25th, 2015BMJ OPEN
This study has identified a significant disparity in road crash mortality risk between pedestrians who use wheelchairs and those who do not. These findings underscore the need for policymakers and planners to fully incorporate disability accommodations into pedestrian infrastructure and for persons who use wheelchairs—and others with disabilities—to remain a salient population when road safety interventions are designed. Finally, additional research to better understand would be valuable to better understand what causes the disparities identified in this study.
