MULTI-STATE SHALE RESEARCH COLLABORATIVE
Over the last five years, firms with an economic interest in the expansion of drilling in the Marcellus and Utica shale formations — and their allies, supporters, and trade associations — have used a variety of tools and techniques to exaggerate the employment impacts of shale drilling. These strategies have ranged from the use of inappropriate measures, such as data on new hires, to represent job growth to the misleading attribution of all jobs in “ancillary” industries to the shale industry.
Our hometown Seattle will soon be eclipsed by another city (a more conservative one!) when it comes to bicycle infrastructure. The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) recently approved a $200 million, ten-year plan to build out 77 miles of new bikeways. Many of the 42 projects are focused on completing two bike corridors that have been on the drawing board for years, the 44-mile Coastal Rail Trail and the 21-mile Inland Rail Trail…It’s another example of a region taking charge of its transportation future, and not waiting for Congress to fund its needs.

NYC DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
Making streets safer requires more than the traditional “3 Es” of engineering, education, and enforcement. It also requires working closely with local communities to collaboratively plan changes in how streets are designed and operated. And it requires learning from our successes to identify and implement the most effective approaches to street design.
The Principal Riverwalk, completed in January 2013, united the east and west sides of downtown. Built on the western banks of the Des Moines River in the heart of the city, the Riverwalk anchors four of downtown’s major attractions, including the Botanical Center, the Court Avenue District, the Science Center of Iowa and the Iowa Events Center. Its 1.2-mile loop serves as a hub for the city’s bike trails connecting nearly 300 miles of trails throughout Central Iowa.

The challenge – lifting these 113-ton girders into place without affecting the 40-60 trains that go through that area each day.

This report focuses on the extraction of natural gas from the Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. While conventional gas production has been conducted here for decades, unconventional wells that utilize advances in horizontal drilling have grown considerably more common in the past decade. Nearly nine thousand horizontal Marcellus Shale natural gas wells have been permitted in these two states from 2005 to 2012, and more than eleven thousand such wells will likely be permitted by the end of 2013.
“Ultimately, if you’re behind a plow, you’re going to get from point A to point B,” says snowplow driver Justen Williams.
The biggest challenge ADOT snowplow drivers face while plowing is other vehicles. If you find yourself near an active plow, the safest place for you to be is at least 50 feet behind it. Let the plow clear the road ahead before you drive on it.
