Automated Vehicle Survey: Three in Four Americans Remain Afraid of Fully Self-Driving Vehicles

A year after a number of high-profile automated vehicle incidents, American attitudes toward fully self-driving cars have not rebounded. AAA’s annual automated vehicle survey found that 71 percent of people are afraid to ride in fully self-driving vehicles – indicating that overall sentiment has not yet returned to what it was prior to these incidents occurring (63 percent). AAA believes the key to helping consumers feel more comfortable with fully self-driving vehicles will be bridging the gap between the perception of automated vehicle technology and the reality of how it actually works in today’s cars.

With the continuous evolution of information and communications technology, cities are becoming smarter, with some pulling ahead as smarter than others due to strategic investments. According to a recent report by International Data Corp. (IDC), smart city technology spending is expected to hit $81 billion in 2018 and grow to $158 billion by 2022. IDC forecasts the focus of smart initiatives and spending will be intelligent traffic and transit as well as fixed visual surveillance, followed by smart outdoor lighting and environmental monitoring.

It has been a dynamic year for energy efficiency, with a mix of often competing forces at the national and state levels. In states including Virginia, New York, and New Jersey, policymakers unveiled plans for increased investment in clean energy and energy efficiency, driven in particular by concerns regarding climate change. Some states, in response to a possible loosening of federal vehicle and appliance standards, worked to keep efficiency standards in place at the state level.

Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) and Congestion

The purpose of this report is to identify the extent to which TNCs contributed to increased roadway congestion in San Francisco between 2010 and 2016, relative to other potential contributing factors including employment growth, population growth, and changes to the transportation system. This information is needed to help the Transportation Authority fulfill our role as the county Congestion Management Agency and inform our policy and planning work.
