Seattle, WA: Fixing the Tunneling Machine

Posted by Infra on Wednesday, February 19th, 2014

This video shows a short clip of a worker replacing a cutting tool inside the SR 99 tunneling machine in January 2014. Crews working for Seattle Tunnel Partners (STP), WSDOT’s contractor for the SR 99 Tunnel Project, changed a number of tools during 158 hours of recent inspections performed under hyperbaric conditions. Tunneling experts now believe that the clogs and other factors contributed to the stoppage of tunneling on Dec. 6, 2013. As the project’s design-build contractor, it is STP’s responsibility to determine the best and most expedient way to resume tunneling.

Streetfilms: The Power of Bicycling (Get Psyched)

Posted by Infra on Monday, February 17th, 2014

This has been the worst winter of my adult life. And if you live most places in the United States you’d probably agree. Between the extreme below-average temperatures and the constant barrage of snowstorms, it’s made cycling outdoors a rough proposition – even for the intrepid.

To attempt to lift my spirits, I started browsing archived Streetfilms bike b-roll from all over the world, and I could feel my mood instantly change. We’ve certainly been lucky to shoot in great bicycle places in beautiful weather and that magic of bike love easily translates via the camera. So I thought maybe I should share some of that joy and get some of you to look forward to the Spring with this hasty assembled montage.

Goshen, VA: Story of the Goshen Bridge

Posted by Infra on Monday, February 10th, 2014

In the 1890s, the tiny Rockbridge County community of Goshen was being transformed into the Iron Center of the South. At the heart of town an elaborate steel bridge was constructed to be a symbol of the wealth that awaited investors. Within three years the boom went bust. Over time, icons of Goshen’s heyday disappeared—except for the steel bridge. But more than a century of use had left the structure a rusting relic. This 2004 video traces the unique history of the Goshen Bridge, its importance to the community, and VDOT’s work to preserve and restore this important landmark.
