AASHTO Celebrates the 60th Anniversary of America’s Interstate Highway System

60 years ago President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act, which was also known as the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act, into law on June 29, 1956. Within a few years the nation would see construction begin replacing a network of two-lane U.S. highways with the multi-lane, high-speed interstate system we know today.

Seattle, WA: Workers Inside the SR 99 Tunneling Machine

This video was provided by Ballard Marine Construction, the firm in charge of managing and performing hyperbaric work on the SR 99 Tunnel Project in Seattle. It shows crews at work behind the SR 99 tunneling machine’s cutterhead during a planned maintenance stop in spring 2016. To stabilize soil and water that would otherwise flow through openings in the cutterhead, crews must pump compressed air into their work space at the front end of the machine.

DOT Partnerships for Promoting Pollinator Habitat

Summary of Respondents’ Partnership Programs

MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
A print survey was distributed to 19 state DOTs expected to have experience with maintaining pollinator habitat on highway ROWs, or partnerships with volunteers to maintain roadside landscapes, to gather information about the development and management of such programs. Representatives from nine Minnesota counties also received the survey to assess pollinator-related activities within Minnesota.

Pittsburgh, PA: The Fort Pitt Tunnel

Travelers familiar with Pittsburgh know that any time you visit you are almost certainly going to travel through one of the three main tunnels surrounding the city. The Fort Pitt Tunnel, a resource that is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, was recently renovated, which impacted this historic resource. As part of the mitigation for this effect, the three-county PennDOT region worked closely with the Pennsylvania Historical Museum Commission and other local groups in Pittsburgh to create a video to capture not only a brief history of the tunnel but to capture the iconic view of traveling through the tunnel and into the City of Pittsburgh.
