America’s busiest rail line is in trouble. The New Haven Line is a 60-mile stretch of track that carries commuters between New York City and Connecticut, and long-distance travelers throughout the Northeast. The line suffered two major outages in 2013, including a collision that injured 76 people and an electrical outage that shut down service on the line for more than two weeks. Delays and service disruptions due to aging infrastructure and critical repair work occur regularly, slowing travel for the line’s 125,000 daily passengers.

2014 Georgia Infrastructure Report Card

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS: GEORGIA SECTION
With new grades for the first time since 2009, Georgia’s infrastructure has shown very little improvement and once again received a cumulative grade of C. The Georgia Section of ASCE assessed the same 12 categories as 2009: aviation, bridges, dams, drinking water, energy, parks and recreation, ports, rail, roads, school facilities, solid waste, stormwater, transit and wastewater. Recognizing the importance of transportation to Georgians, we added two new categories in 2014: ports and rail. As indicated by the grade, much work remains to be done, though there are some bright spots.
Great American Infrastructure: The High Line, NYC

What: NYC’s Highline Park, constructed on an unused elevated freight rail in the west side of Manhattan
Where: Manhattan’s West Side, between Gansevoort and West 34th Streets
When: The High Line first saw traffic in 1934, and the last train crossed its tracks in 1980. Construction on the park began in 2006, and the first section opened in 2009. Construction on additional sections is projected to continue through 2014.
North Dakota: Massive Explosion Following Train Derailment
Wednesday, January 1st, 2014
A train is derailed west of Casselton, North Dakota. It happened at 35th Street and 154th Avenue Southeast just before 2:20 p.m. Monday. No injuries have been reported so far. Several area emergency teams are on scene and are setting up an incident command center. A viewer who is about a half mile from the derailment tells Valley News Live she can see large flames.

The Sacramento Court’s November 25 decision denying the California High Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) access to Proposition 1A bond funds (see our column of November 26) was the first in a series of setbacks suffered by the high speed rail project in recent days. The project was dealt another serious blow on November 26, when two influential members of Congress, Jeff Denham (R-CA), Chairman of the Railroads Subcommittee of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and Tom Latham (R-IA), Chairman of the House Transportation Appropriation Subcommittee requested the General Accountability Office (GAO) to review the federal grant agreements with the Authority in light of the Court’s rulings.
