Martha Roskowski directs PeopleForBikes’ Green Lane Project, jumpstarting protected bike lanes and low-cost street retrofits in U.S. cities. Martha enjoys being part of the PeopleForBikes team and the way protected bike lanes turn a busy street into a comfortable and inviting place to ride.

“…What’s happening is there’s this realization that if you provide people with safe and comfortable places to ride by creating protected bike lanes on big, busy streets, by connecting them to completely separated pathways and side streets where the volume and speed of traffic is low, that people will ride. So they’re not crazy to not be out there on the streets today. The good news is that there’s rapid progress. In transportation terms there’s pretty rapid progress toward retrofitting streets to provide those spaces where people feel safe, and they are safe.”

AASHTO: Bike Month 2016 Recap

Established in 1956, National Bike Month which is celebrated every May in the United States, gives individuals and organizations the opportunity to highlight the many ways bicycling benefits people and communities. In this Transportation TV retrospective we look back at National Bike Month 2016. Our video begins in the nation’s capital and take you on a tour of several states to show you the importance of bicycling to departments of transportation –aimed at building multimodal transportation systems. Biking gives citizens greater travel and recreation options and it leads to healthier more livable communities.

Based on our projections, the conclusion is pretty straightforward. As a region we must find ways to expand our infrastructure, enhance the efficiency with which we use it, and find ways to conserve energy, water, and open space in order to accommodate the population growth and expanded economic output we project through 2030. The complexity lies in determining which course to take and ultimately how to pay for it.

And at some point this investment is going to have to be increased into the future…We’re going to have to find more money, and when we find the money it will never be enough to do everything that we want to do.”

Michigan’s Water Infrastructure Investment Needs

MICHIGAN INFRASTRUCTURE & TRANSPORTATION ASSOCIATION (MITA)
Currently, about 75 percent of Michigan residents get their drinking water from 1,390 community water systems, and approximately 70 percent are served by 1,080 wastewater treatment systems (MDEQ 10/31/15). Most of these systems were built between 50 and 100 years ago, while some in the state’s oldest cities date back to the 1800s. Many of these systems are fast approaching, or have already exceeded, their expected lifespan. Communities throughout Michigan, therefore, face the challenge of maintaining and updating old infrastructure that was designed and built to meet former, less strict requirements, but now must meet emerging, more stringent state and federal drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater standards.
