Transportation planners and traffic engineers are faced nowadays with immense modeling challenges arising from several emerging policy, planning, and engineering developments. Hence, interest has grown in applying traffic analysis tools capable of analyzing travel activities and dynamic network performance for a corridor or region over peak hours or even extended daily hours.

Vision Los Angeles seeks to advance economic and environmental success for Los Angeles County by focusing on transportation mobility. It is led and driven by a partnership between a leading national environmental group, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), and one of the premier business development organizations in California and the Los Angeles region, the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC).
By summer 2010, the expansion of bike lanes in NYC exposed a clash of long-standing bad habits — such as pedestrians jaywalking, cyclists running red lights, and motorists plowing through crosswalks.

AAA and IHS Global Insight project 34.9 million travelers will journey at least 50 miles from home this upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend. This represents an increase of 0.2 percent relative to the 34.8 million trips that occurred over the holiday period in 2010.

HARVARD CENTER FOR RISK ANALYSIS
Traffic congestion is a significant issue in virtually every urban area in the United States and around the world. Anyone who spends any time commuting knows that the time and fuel wasted while sitting in traffic can not only be annoying, but can lead to real economic costs. An examination of the peer-reviewed literature shows that there are many previous analyses that estimate the economic costs of congestion based on fuel and time wasted, but that these studies don’t include the costs of the potential public health impacts. Sitting in traffic leads to higher tailpipe emissions which everyone is exposed to, and the economic costs of those exposures have not been explored.
CENTER FOR TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT
In many regions throughout the country, the fastest growing employment centers are now located in auto-oriented suburban communities at the edge of metropolitan regions. From a public transportation perspective, dispersed and low-density employment centers are very difficult to serve through fixed-guideway transit. The location of new jobs at the edge also has important equity implications, as low-income residents have difficulty accessing jobs in auto-oriented suburbs from their inner city, urban, or rural neighborhoods.
Accessibility is the ease of reaching valued destinations, such as jobs, shops, schools, entertainment, and recreation. As such, accessibility creates value. Capturing some of this value would allow state and local governments to invest in the operations, maintenance, and in some cases expansion of their transportation networks. Accessibility, as an outcome-oriented metric, can effectively assess transportation’s economic impact, and capturing the value of accessibility would help states and metropolitan areas develop sustainable transportation funding streams.

Demand for ships to operate on Marine Highway corridors will also provide new business at the nation’s commercial shipyards.
