Montana DOT Timelapse: How a Bridge is Built

A Montana Department of Transportation bridge replacement project received honors in the 2015 America’s Transportation Awards competition. The announcement Wednesday was made at the 2015 Western Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials annual meeting. The project, “Deep Creek Canyon Weekend Bridge Replacement” won in the Best Use of Innovation category for the WASHTO region.

The average age of these sub-par bridges is 55 years — over the typical design life of 50 years and 14 years older than the average age of all Oregon bridges (41 years old). More than one in twelve Oregon bridges were built before 1948 — which means more than 680 bridges are older than the Korean War and creation of Medicare.

Washington State: Celebrating the Manette Bridge

The story of the Manette Bridge is actually a story of the people of Manette and Bremerton in the beautiful pacific northwest in Washington state. In the late 1920’s, it was very apparent that a bridge was needed to connect these two communities. The high cost prevented any financial backing being offered on a city, state, or even federal level. That didn’t stop these determined people though. With great energy and enthusiasm, they enacted a unique plan that made the Manette Bridge on the day it was christened, truly, the bridge of the people.

The State of Minnesota’s Bridges

The average age of these sub-par bridges is 66 years — well over the typical design life of 50 years and nearly double the average age of all Minnesota bridges (35 years old). More than one in ten Minnesota bridges were built before 1948 — which means more than 1,300 bridges are older than the Korean War and creation of Medicare…Minnesota drivers collectively took close to 628 million trips over deficient bridges in 2014. That’s more than 1.7 million trips per day or almost 1,200 trips every minute taken over deficient Minnesota bridges in 2014.

The life cycle of New York’s roads is greatly affected by the state and local government’s ability to perform timely maintenance and upgrades to ensure that road and highway surfaces last as long as possible…More than a third – 37 percent – of New York’s major locally and state-maintained urban roads and highways have pavements in poor condition. An additional 43 percent of the state’s major urban roads have pavements in mediocre or fair condition, and the remaining 20 percent are in good condition.
