This year’s midterm elections had the highest turnout in a half century, with 49 percent of the population voting for candidates at the national, state, and local level. In the House of Representatives, control flipped with Democrats poised to pick up nearly 40 seats. Although a few races are still uncalled, it looks like this year could be the third largest gain by any party in 40 years.

The results of last week’s election are in – Americans delivered a split decision on the makeup of the next Congress. In the House, Democrats won control from the Republicans and now hold the majority. In the Senate, Republicans maintained power and even added seats to their majority. This means that we’ll be operating under divided government for the next two years. But it doesn’t mean that nothing will get done.

The most recent announcement of a major development that will take advantage of the Opportunity Zones program is in Pennsylvania. A developer has announced plans to build what will be the tallest building outside the main business and commercial area of the city. The project, a 30-33 story, $130 million, mixed-use facility, will include 250 apartments, two floors of office space and space for restaurants on the first floor.

As engineers who plan, design, build and operate facilities and infrastructure that produce emissions, we are part of the problem. Clearly, we should be part of the solution. What an opportunity!
We must overhaul our engineering industry with new standards, processes and methods to radically cut GHG emissions and protect communities, facilities and infrastructure from devastating climate impacts.
Using technology readily available, rather than bricks and mortar, border patrol agents could monitor all 2,000 miles of the border in real time. This possibility seems to be leading many politicians to the idea of a virtual border. Most believe that a virtual border would be more effective, less costly and more humane than a physical wall.
