This year for NYC’s 2nd Car-Free NYC Earth Day, things picked up considerably from last year’s inaugural event. The big spectacle was that you could walk or bike up Broadway from Union Square all the way to Times Square on car-free streets. But in a way since the Science March was already coming down Broadway to 47th street from the north, many people were able to traverse it all the way to Columbus Circle.

Every time I post a new video on the sneckdown phenomenon, I get all sorts of comments, emails and tweets on social media that it will never work. That you can’t justify the idea. That I should “stop hating on cars”. That no matter how well done, the video showing sneckdowns 10 feet from the curb that have been there for weeks (that drivers are successful navigating) that they couldn’t work. That we still need all the asphalt for video and that pedestrians are second class citizens.

We looked at 8 of the 17 streets where bike lanes were installed between 2010 and 2015 with sufficient collisions and ridership data to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of the projects. Overall, the number of automobile collisions decreased, pedestrian collisions stayed relatively flat, and bicycle crash risk decreased, after accounting for increased ridership.

New Yorkers are more likely to walk to work compared with the national average, and a recent New York City (NYC) Department of Transportation report shows that cycling is becoming more popular; the most recent annual 12-hour count of cyclists crossing the East River bridges increased from 2,041 cyclists in 2000 to 15,394 in 2015.

Transit, walking and biking are critical components of a 21st century transportation system in Colorado but have been underfunded for decades. Without significant investments in transit, biking and pedestrian services and infrastructure, Colorado will not be able to meet the demands and challenges of our shifting demographics and growing population, and will miss out on the many benefits transit, walking and biking provide.
