The 2009 ASCE Infrastructure Report Card grade for dams nationally was a “D,” and identified 31 dams in Iowa in need of repairs to meet minimum standards. The Lake Delhi dam failure destroyed acres of farmland, hundreds of homes and businesses — yet another example of the consequences of neglecting infrastructure. Fortunately, this time there were no injuries.
Katrina and the I-35W Bridge collapse were shocking examples of enormous infrastructure failures, with heart-breaking consequences. Is that what it takes to spur action? Have we not learned any lessons from those tragedies?
