DC Water’s Contractor (SKJD) will utilize an innovative ground freezing technology to improve ground condition in advance of shaft, adit and near surface construction of the First Street Tunnel Project. By creating a natural gas generated closed loop brine system, the ground will be stabilized in advance of excavation. Ground Freezing ensures that the required excavation in the four construction staging areas for this important project will be fully stabilized.
This technology produces environmental and local benefits with a smaller construction footprint, with less truck traffic, reduced noise and dust.
The ground freeze method is environmentally and technically superior to the traditional methods of excavating soils and protects adjacent structures from any potential of ground settlement.
