Portland’s population is expected to grow rapidly over the next 20 years. The city adopted a new policy to prioritize walking first, before all other modes of transportation. PedPDX is Portland’s city-wide pedestrian plan. It will prioritize sidewalks, crossings and other investments to make walking safer and more comfortable across the city.

Wednesday, September 27th, 2017UDOT closed Bangerter Highway near 7000 South the night of Aug. 19 while crews installed a new pedestrian bridge. The bridge is part of the Bangerter Interchanges project. UDOT is building a freeway-like overpass at 7000 S. This new pedestrian bridge over Bangerter Highway replaces one that was removed earlier this year to make room for the overpass.

Thursday, April 27th, 2017The number of pedestrian fatalities in the United States (U.S.) increased 25 percent from 2010 to 2015, while at the same time, total traffic deaths increased by about six (6) percent. Pedestrians now account for the largest proportion of traffic fatalities recorded in the past 25 years. Earlier studies by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), based on preliminary data reported by State Highway Safety Offices (SHSOs), were the first to predict recent increases in pedestrian fatalities.

To educate pedestrians and drivers on the importance of safety and observing pedestrian laws, particularly around crosswalks and intersections, the Colorado Department of Transportation’s introduced Fred Estrian: the classic walk signal brought to life.
