Households and businesses depend on the efficient and reliable delivery of freight to both urban and rural areas. Federal support for freight increased under the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act, as the FAST Act included provisions to define, establish, and provide funding for a national highway freight program. The FAST Act freight provisions were designed to address significant needs in the transportation system to ensure that projected increases in freight volumes can be handled efficiently across all transportation modes.

Wednesday, May 24th, 2017“There is no silver bullet, just a lot of silver BBs.” That’s how U.S. Sen. Benjamin Cardin described the conundrum facing state and local government leaders dealing with funding shortfalls. At a Tuesday congressional hearing on leveraging federal transportation funding, panelists explained that transportation needs can’t be solved by placing all responsibility on state and local governmental entities. There is agreement that transportation officials need funding options just to maintain the current transportation infrastructure, but state and local leaders are arguing for continued investment from the federal government as well.

Thursday, December 29th, 2016Last week, DOT announced another groundbreaking financial tool – a product of the Build America Bureau – and provided an example. The Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority (Sound Transit) and the Build America Bureau signed a pioneering, first-of-its-kind Master Credit Agreement (MCA). The agreement lays a foundation for working together to initiate four transit projects in the Seattle area. The projects, now that they are consolidated, will be eligible to receive close to $2 billion in financing. As a result of the MCA, the Build America Bureau will be able to close one deal that covers multiple projects.

DOT’s role has typically been to directly support the states through drafting regulation, creating informational resources, and providing technical assistance and program funding. Through the Ladders of Opportunity Transportation Empowerment Pilot (LaddersTEP) model, DOT provided direct aid to cities to achieve these positive results.
