As joblessness continues to afflict millions of Americans, the national conversation has turned to investments in transportation infrastructure as a path to job creation. Calls to invest in our crumbling highways and bridges and cash-strapped transit systems have come from the AFLCIO and U.S. Chamber of Commerce alike. President Obamaʼs American Jobs Act proposes $50 billion in immediate spending on transportation infrastructure, while Congressional Republicans are reportedly seeking ways to boost revenue levels in their proposed federal transportation authorization act.

High performing infrastructure is the foundation for U.S. economic competitiveness in a global age. After all, America’s infrastructure—transportation, telecommunications, energy, and water systems—forms the physical platform of our $14 trillion free enterprise economy.

By all accounts, the nation’s transportation networks continue to languish. Numerous recent reports have called attention to the dire condition of transportation infrastructure in the United States. These reports have all called for additional investment citing potentially disastrous effects on the economy, from manufacturing to real estate and ultimately, to the nation’s global competitiveness. None of these reports focused on the performance of transportation infrastructure and the relationship between performance and economic growth.

David C. Chavern is executive vice president and chief operating officer at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He serves as chair of the Chamber’s Management Committee and is responsible for day-to-day operations as well as long-term planning. This includes responsibility for a range of policy, financial, administrative, and legal operations. Chavern also oversees several revenue operations, including corporate partnerships and small business outreach and membership.

Vote for America’s best transportation project of 2010

Missouri Department of Transportation The I-64 St. Louis Project involved limited funds, an expedited construction schedule, and a coordinated public outreach campaign to allay public concern and minimize the potential impact on motorists. In December 2009, I-64 reopened to traffic nearly one month early and $11 million under budget.

Ten finalists, announced today by the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO), AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, are competing for the 2010 America’s Transportation Awards. The National Transportation Award will be decided by a panel of judges, but the People’s Choice Award will be decided by popular vote. Online voting starts today and ends October 18th, 2010.
