Construction, machinery, building products and engineering firms will be in high demand. Following Hurricane Katrina alone, a $100 million emergency FEMA contract was awarded to a construction and engineering firm for housing management and construction. Another similar firm also earned a $100 million contract to provide temporary housing and communications tools to hurricane victims. And a $30.9 million contract was awarded for repair of a bridge on Interstate 10.

With a current price tag estimated at $160 billion for emergency and recovery efforts, the private sector will play a major role in providing for cleanup and revitalization. Contracting opportunities will be plentiful for thousands of companies and Texas and Texans will welcome their assistance.

Major cities throughout the U.S. are focused on urban redesign to create vibrant communities in downtown areas. Parks, trails, green spaces and community gathering places are all being constructed. Green infrastructure is also a high priority. Engineering design firms, construction contractors, landscaping companies and playground equipment suppliers are in high demand. Cities are also enhancing Wi-Fi access, moving to IoT (Internet of Things) technology and launching renewable energy projects. Funds for these types of projects are coming from various sources and as a result, lots of attention is now focused on what’s happening at the local levels of government.

Created three years ago and finally funded this year, the Environmental Protection Agency’s Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) program may soon announce the first round of funding for water infrastructure projects. The agency has $1.5 billion in available funds and it is all designated for water projects.
The EPA announced that 12 of the 43 public entities submitting letters of interest for project funding from the WIFIA program have been approved. These applicants may now move through the program and apply for low-interest loans.

The federal government may not like the Paris Climate Agreement, but state and local elected officials do. This past weekend, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti hosted a large number of mayors who reiterated their commitment to the partnership agreement. These officials visiting Florida for the U.S. Conference of Mayors represent the Climate Mayors, a bipartisan organization that was organized in 2014. The group now boasts 331 mayors representing 65 million Americans. The membership includes mayors from the 10 largest cities in the U.S., including traditional energy hubs such as Houston and Dallas.
View this complete post...The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) recently announced it has published a Federal Register notice seeking public input on regulatory reform regarding infrastructure projects, including the identification of hurdles that currently exist and how to alleviate them.
