Hidden Highways: Fog and Traffic Crashes on America’s Roads

Fog presents numerous challenges to motorists. By definition, it reduces visibility to less than 5/8-mile, and, as fog obscures details of the driving environment and reduces contrast, drivers have difficulty accurately perceiving certain things that are crucial for safe driving, such as depth and speed. Moreover, because high beams reflect off of the suspended water droplets that fog comprises and actually make it harder to see, drivers are deprived of a tool that is useful in other low-visibility situations.

National ‘Bicyclist Safety’ report gets actual safety trends backwards

A report released by the Governors Highway Safety Association Monday is a perfect example of what can go wrong when safety experts get stuck behind their own windshields. The GHSA, an umbrella organization for state departments of transportation whose claims to fame include popularizing the phrase “aggressive pedestrians,” is surely staffed by smart people who are working hard to reduce injuries and deaths. But the problems in this report start right at the top.

NYC: Six Months of Vision Zero Traffic Enforcement

Despite two decades of steady declines,traffic fatalities remain an epidemic in New York City. More people are killed in traffic than are murdered by guns;traffic crashes are the foremost cause of preventable death for New York City children and, after falls,the primary cause of injury-related death for older New Yorkers.

In February 2014, Mayor Bill de Blasio launched a Vision Zero initiative –with the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries in New York City by 2024 –which the New York Police Department embraced wholeheartedly, instructing all precinct commanders to increase enforcement of the most dangerous traffic violations.Increased enforcement remains a central element to achieving Mayor de Blasio’s Vision Zero goal.

Bicyclist Safety Must Be A Priority

LEAGUE OF AMERICAN BICYCLISTS
This year, the U.S. Department of Transportation will decide how it will hold states accountable for public safety on our nation’s roadways. The League strongly believes that the Federal Highway Administration needs to set a national performance measure for safety that includes non-motorized safety.

Based on our experience with Every Bicyclists Counts, there is a clear role for the USDOT and state DOTs in reducing the number of bicyclist fatalities and improving our understanding of the risks bicyclists face.

Oregon DOT: It Can Be a Dangerous Job

The Oregon Department of Transportation’s Photo/Video Services Unit produced a new safety training video sponsored by the Employee Safety Unit about a near miss incident. Our employees and colleagues tell their story of a very serious near miss incident from last August. Although no one was hurt and there was no serious property damage, it was a very scary near miss, as you will find when you listen to the crews’ account of that day. Please take their message to heart and be safe.

American communities are poised for a renaissance in walking. We’re walking more often, for fun and to get to places in our neighborhood. We turn to WalkScore.com when figuring out where to live and our most walkable places often are among the most economically vibrant in the country. Hundreds of cities have adopted Complete Streets policies to ensure walking is at the forefront of our decisions regarding street design. Public health organizations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the Office of the Surgeon General to the local doctor’s office are encouraging us to get out for a walk for physical activity and to combat chronic disease. And indeed, we are walking: six out of 10 people walk for physical activity, and the share of adults who said they walk for transportation grew 6 percent from 2005 to 2010, according to the most recent data available. But we are still dealing with a legacy of roadways that fail to account for the safety of people on foot.
