This report expands our analysis beyond lead to examine all drinking water contaminants regulated under the SDWA. Much as Flint is not the only water system with lead problems, we have found that Lead and Copper Rule problems are far from the only widespread violations of drinking water rules. Our research shows that in 2015 alone, nearly 77 million people were served by more than 18,000 community water systems that violated at least one SDWA rule, and there were more than 80,000 violations of SDWA rules that year. These violations included exceeding health-based standards, failing to properly test water for contaminants, and failing to report contamination to state authorities or the public.

The number of pedestrian fatalities in the United States (U.S.) increased 25 percent from 2010 to 2015, while at the same time, total traffic deaths increased by about six (6) percent. Pedestrians now account for the largest proportion of traffic fatalities recorded in the past 25 years. Earlier studies by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), based on preliminary data reported by State Highway Safety Offices (SHSOs), were the first to predict recent increases in pedestrian fatalities.

Local Detroiters may have seen test runs of the city’s new QLINE tram running its 6.6-mile loop between Downtown and Midtown in past weeks, and the city is finally getting ready to let the public climb aboard. Running along Woodward Avenue between Downtown and Midtown, this modern tram line will connect two of Detroit’s most vibrant shopping, dining and nightlife districts. The grand opening is scheduling for Friday, May 12.

Every time I post a new video on the sneckdown phenomenon, I get all sorts of comments, emails and tweets on social media that it will never work. That you can’t justify the idea. That I should “stop hating on cars”. That no matter how well done, the video showing sneckdowns 10 feet from the curb that have been there for weeks (that drivers are successful navigating) that they couldn’t work. That we still need all the asphalt for video and that pedestrians are second class citizens.

Construction sites have stringent safety protocols in place to prevent adverse events and accidents. Even with all the precautions and preventive procedures, fatal injury rate for the industry is quite high. This can be attributed to a number of reasons ranging from oversight on part of site managers to malfunctioning equipment. Another probable cause is the sheer size of the industry where at any given day more than 6.5 million people are at work at work sites numbering an approximate 252,000.

More than 1,200 Complete Streets policies are now in place at the state, regional, and local levels. And over the last year, federal agencies have followed suit with new changes in national policy intended to make streets safer for everyone.

We looked at 8 of the 17 streets where bike lanes were installed between 2010 and 2015 with sufficient collisions and ridership data to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of the projects. Overall, the number of automobile collisions decreased, pedestrian collisions stayed relatively flat, and bicycle crash risk decreased, after accounting for increased ridership.
