In 2015, there were 1,330 pedestrian crashes and 59 pedestrian crash fatalities in Colorado. To educate pedestrians and drivers on the importance of safety and observing pedestrian laws, particularly around crosswalks and intersections, the Colorado Department of Transportation’s introduced Fred Estrian: the classic walk signal brought to life. Fred took to the streets of Denver to educate drivers and pedestrians alike on the important of using and remaining alert at crosswalks.

Low‐income and minority populations suffer disproportionately high rates of chronic disease. Accordingly, national and international authorities have made the elimination of health disparities a priority. Many factors can contribute to health disparities, including disparities in the quality of neighborhood environments. For example, having a neighborhood park and pedestrian‐friendly streets may impact opportunities to engage in physical activity – a behavior that can reduce risk of chronic disease.

TRANSITCENTER
When do people choose transit, and in what conditions? We answer these critical questions by examining how people use transit, using information gathered from a survey of 3,000 people who ride transit in 17 regions and through focus-group discussions with riders in three cities.
Heidi Goedhart, UDOT’s Active Transportation Manager, helps us understand what “Active Transportation” means to Utah. She talks about UDOT’s programs to keep cyclists and pedestrians safe on Utah roads, and also discusses what we are doing to promote safety in alternative modes of transportation. District 9 Council Representative Rudy Vargas-Lima, confirmed that the City will move forward creating a “marked crosswalk” with “rectangular rapid flash beacons” and that the project is funded, but not scheduled at this time…The intersection falls just outside the El Cajon Mobility Study, an ongoing project to develop infrastructure improvements that benefit the Rapid Bus service and make the corridor more friendly to pedestrians and cyclists.

MICHIGAN MUNICIPAL LEAGUE
The Michigan Municipal League (MML), through its public policy forums, research, and education, identified eight assets that Michigan’s communities need to grow and strengthen in order for our state to prosper in coming years. In 2015, MML hired Public Sector Consultants (PSC) to evaluate the relationship between these eight assets and economic growth indicators like income, employment, property values, educational attainment within the workforce, and new business starts.
URBAN LAND INSTITUTE
Active transportation was, until recently, the forgotten mode of travel. However, in recent years, investments in infrastructure that accommodates those who walk and ride bicycles have begun to reshape communities. Sometimes called “nonmotorized transportation,” active transportation involves human-powered activity, primarily walking and bicycling.
