Durability is a problem for today’s bridges. Bridge components break down. Soils become unstable. Bridge decks deteriorate, often unnoticed. Replacing bridges can be costly, time-consuming, and disruptive to traffic. And the cycle repeats as bridges age. Innovative methods have been developed for designing and constructing new bridges, repairing existing bridges, stabilizing bridge foundations, and nondestructively testing bridges; but they are not routinely used. Today’s innovations, however, can become tomorrow’s standards.

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s decision to cancel the proposed commuter trans-Hudson rail tunnel (ARC) offers another example of a resolve by the new wave of fiscally conservative governors to rein in spending on public works that, in their judgment, present an unacceptable level of risk and cost. While Christie’s decision was widely condemned as shortsighted by members of the infrastructure lobby, it was supported as fiscally prudent by a majority of New Jersey voters. (By a margin of 51 to 39 percent according to a Rutgers University poll).

Stressed public budgets and delayed passage of long-term federal funding have taken a toll on many transportation infrastructure projects in the United States during the last year. Nevertheless, many significant projects are moving ahead. The inaugural CE News Transportation Projects Roadmap lists 50 notable transportation infrastructure projects in the United States — ranked by estimated cost — that are currently in some stage of planning, design, or early construction. The list includes 21 road/highway/bridge projects, 17 rail/transit projects, seven port/waterway projects, and five airport projects…
