New York area airports continue to lag behind their international and national competitors when it comes to modern, efficient mass transit access, according to a new survey released today by the Global Gateway Alliance, comparing airport access at the world’s top 30 busiest airports for passenger traffic with those in the New York-New Jersey region. New York City’s airports will get a major facelift with Governor Andrew Cuomo’s 2015 Opportunity Agenda.
The announcement doesn’t come as a surprise, given that LaGuardia recently suffered some very public infrastructure criticisms. Add to that over $5 billion in one-off legal settlements from Wall Street recently awarded to New York State, and you’ve got a perfect recipe for infrastructure investment.

NYU WAGNER RUDIN CENTER FOR TRANSPORTATION POLICY & MANAGEMENT
The Rudin Center ranked New York City’s 177 neighborhoods according to the number of jobs accessible from the neighborhoods by transit, within 60 minutes and completed by 9:00 a.m.on a Monday morning. The number of jobs accessible in this timeframe ranged from 42,275 (South Staten Island) to 4,839,253 (North Chelsea). Our analysis reveals substantial variation in levels of transit access across New York affect residents’ employment levels, travel modes and incomes. Most notably, the rankings result in a swoosh-shaped relationship between transit and income: the highest incomes are connected to the areas with the most access, and low transit access still provides average incomes, because residents travel by private car rather than transit.
THE CITY OF NEW YORK OFFICE OF THE COMPTROLLER
During the audit period, NYCBS failed to maintain Citi Bike program equipment (bikes and stations) as required by its contract with DOT and its own internal operating procedures. Specifically, NYCBS did not: (1) perform maintenance checks on all bicycles on a monthly basis; (2) perform station inspections twice per week; (3) ensure that on-street maintenance checks of bikes were properly documented; (4) respond within the required timeframes to cleanliness issues with bicycles and stations after discovery or notification of problems; and (5) maintain connectivity of stations to its main database at required levels. As a result of these deficiencies, the riding public is exposed to increased safety risks and customer satisfaction is potentially jeopardized.
Now celebrating its fiftieth year, MTA Bridges and Tunnels’ Verrazano-Narrows Bridge opened to the public on November 21, 1964.
