The Twin Cities freeway network is a densely instrumented and growing transportation system. As the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) pursues a performance-based management strategy to monitor the health of the network and make planning and management decisions, the data from this vast network is being examined using a variety of methods.
Fifteen years ago, Powderhorn Lake in Minneapolis was in a dismal state—trash floated on the surface, the shoreline was eroding, and fertilizer and animal waste running off from the surrounding neighborhood caused frequent algae blooms…But today, thanks to the efforts of residents, the city, and other groups, Powderhorn Lake is a poster child for what can happen when citizens and government work together to create change.

RECONNECTING AMERICA
This report documents real estate development patterns along three recently constructed light rail transit lines in the United States. This topic is important for local planning practitioners, transit agencies, community members and other stakeholders in their efforts to plan for new transit investments and foster transit-oriented development (TOD). Setting realistic expectations about the scale, timing and location of private investment along new transit lines is especially critical where new development is expected to help pay for needed transit improvements, neighborhood amenities, or other community benefits.

Almost a year ago, we as a nation were stunned and saddened by the tragic bridge collapse in Minneapolis that took 13 lives, injured 144 others, and disrupted the life of a great city.
In the intervening year we have watched with pride the way in which federal, state, and city transportation agencies, contractors, and construction teams have worked night and day to bring to life a new bridge, unsurpassed in technology and design.
Also in the past year we in the transportation industry have looked even more closely at the safety and sustainability of America’s 590,000 bridges for today and into the future.
