Presidential election cycles represent opportunities for big changes—at least that’s what candidates promise in their stump speeches. In reality, the months leading up to voting day are often characterized by inaction, especially in an era when representatives from both political parties are more focused on waging political battles rather than passing needed legislation.
TRANSPORTATION FOR AMERICA
To remain economically competitive, states must invest in infrastructure. States are also well positioned to be incubators of innovative transportation policy and funding solutions. Recent history shows willingness by state legislatures — regardless of political party — to step up and provide the necessary resources to invest in transportation systems. With 12 states successfully taking action in 2015, last year had the largest number of increases in state transportation funding since Transportation for America began tracking this phenomenon several years ago.

After years of inactivity on the issue, transportation funding has increasingly become a critical issue in states both red and blue and elected state representatives have responded by moving to raise new funding at the state and even local level. With 12 states successfully taking action this year, 2015 had the largest number of successful increases in state transportation funding since Transportation for America began tracking this phenomenon several years ago.
US HIGH SPEED RAIL ASSOCIATION
Washington, DC – The US High Speed Rail Association (USHSR) commends the California Legislature for their vision, leadership, and commitment to the state’s new high speed rail project. USHSR and its 250 members fully support this visionary transportation project, and commend the legislature and Governor Brown for leading the way in getting America to think big again.
“Congress has adjourned for the summer recess with neither house taking action to extend the federal surface transportation program. Understandably, the transportation community is rife with speculation about what is likely to happen in September when the existing program authority is scheduled to expire.”
