The CTA has more than 224 miles of railroad tracks across Chicago and surrounding suburbs, serving the agency’s eight rail lines. Chicago: Waste Management – Unrealized Environmental & Economic Benefits for Chicagoland

Wednesday, November 5th, 2014
Figure 1. Average Total Costs of All Waste Management Components for 20 Municipalities in the Chicago Metro Region

DELTA INSTITUTE
The Chicago Metropolitan Region’s waste management statistics lag behind national averages. Currently, Cook County residents produce 7 pounds of waste per day compared to the average American who generates 4.4 pounds of waste per day, and Cook County’s 29% (excluding Chicago) recycling rate trails the national average of 34%. Concerned by Cook County’s above-average waste generation and below-average recycling rate, Delta Institute sought to determine the existing conditions of the region’s waste management system and its associated environmental and economic impacts.

Jacky Grimshaw on The Infra Blog

Jacky Grimshaw joined CNT in 1992 and has since developed its capacity to engage in public policy advocacy, transportation research, public participation tool development, GIS mapping, and community economic development.

“Sometimes the bottom up is the only way to move those folks up there at the top…I think part of the challenge is to always try and help people see how they can make a difference, how they can get the elected officials to behave differently so that we really get these problems solved.”

(This post also appears in Going Places, a policy blog by CNT’s Jacky Grimshaw) I recently read the U.S. PIRG Education Fund’s excellent new report, Highway Boondoggles: Wasted Money and America’s Transportation Future. I couldn’t help thinking about the decision(s) looming in CNT’s backyard about the proposed Illiana Expressway. Highway Boondoggles focuses on the national and […]

Illinois Highway Materials Sustainability Efforts

Wednesday, September 10th, 2014
Figure 1. Reclaimed material use, 2013.

ILLINOIS CENTER FOR TRANSPORTATION
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has many years of experience using a variety of reclaimed and recycled materials in highway construction. Major material use in highway construction is in the form of aggregates, concrete, and hot-mix asphalt (HMA). It should be no surprise that reclaimed and recycled material use is aligned with usage of these basic construction materials. This report presents the quantity of materials used in 2013, along with specific reporting as required in Illinois Public Act 097-0314. Specific reporting on use of shingles, along with efforts to reduce the carbon footprint and to achieve cost savings through the use of recycled and reclaimed materials, in asphalt paving projects is presented.

Interactive Map: The Chicago Commute

Transitized: Chicago Commute

A unique interactive map from Transitized illustrates the various modes of transportation used by Chicagoans in their daily commutes.

You’ll see a lot of red on the map, symbolizing the carbon-conscious citizen’s nightmare of “driving alone,” but the outlook’s not all so bleak–most downtown neighborhoods favor walking, and some transit corridors with direct access to downtown (though not all, surprisingly) bring a majority of residents to work. Biking and carpooling are all but invisible at first, but mouseover any area of the map and you’ll see quick stats for that exact spot, revealing that lesser-utilized modes of transportation are still present in significant–if not majority–numbers.

Natural Connections: Green Infrastructure in Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana

Natural Connections: Green Infrastructure in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana

OPENLANDS PROJECT
CENTER FOR NEIGHBORHOOD TECHNOLOGY
Green infrastructure is the interconnected network of land and water that supports native species, maintains natural and ecological processes, sustains air and water resources, and contributes to the health and quality of life of people and communities…The need to protect the region’s green infrastructure is greater than ever. Rapid changes in land use, increases in non-native species, and other threats imperil the region’s natural heritage. Green infrastructure should serve as the strategic framework for conservation and development so that linkages and key natural areas can be preserved before development occurs.
