ACEC Engineering Business Index – 3rd Quarter 2016

Wednesday, October 19th, 2016
EBI Trendline

Firm leaders are optimistic that the engineering market will improve over the coming year. Market expectations for one year from today rose a hefty 6.2 points to 63.3, the largest quarter-over-quarter increase since the EBI’s inception. “Things are very good for our transportation infrastructure firm and we expect it to continue as awareness increases that we need to address it,” said one respondent. A member in Colorado said, “Market conditions improved in our area in the last three years and remain very strong.” One area of concern continues to be softness in the energy-producing states. “Wyoming’s economy is significantly down due to coal, oil, and natural gas sales declines,” said a respondent. “Nearly all infrastructure funding derives from state taxes on those industries, thus our outlook is less optimistic.”

Figure 1: Industry Transformation Framework

WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM
The Engineering & Construction (E&C) industry strongly affects the economy, the environment and society as a whole. It touches the daily lives of everyone, as quality of life is heavily influenced by the built environment surrounding people. The construction industry serves almost all other industries, as all economic value creation occurs within or by means of buildings or other “constructed assets”. As an industry, moreover, it accounts for 6% of global GDP. It is also the largest global consumer of raw materials, and constructed objects account for 25-40% of the world’s total carbon emissions.

Grand Challenges for Engineering: Imperatives, Prospects, and Priorities

Monday, May 2nd, 2016
 Wesley Harris

NATIONAL ACADEMY OF ENGINEERING
Robert Socolow observed that the 14 Grand Challenges fall into four categories. The first is sustainability—maintaining air and water quality, protecting freshwater quantity, preventing sea level rise, keeping forests and other ecosystems in good condition, and minimizing artificially triggered climate change. Next is personal and community health, because, he pointed out, “as individuals we can live fulfilling lives only if we are healthy.” But, he added, “people have a record of being dangerous to each other,” hence the third category, vulnerability and security.

Guest on The Infra Blog: Keith Roe, Incoming President, American Society of Mechanical Engineers

Tuesday, March 29th, 2016
Keith Roe, ASME

K. Keith Roe, PE, has been selected as the president-nominee of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) for the 2016-2017 term of office. Roe, a fellow of ASME, has been an active member of the Society for more than 40 years.

I think one of the biggest challenges in this area is getting people to understand what the issues are…It’s an important thing and it really is so important to our economy. We need to do a better job, all of us, at getting the message across. People need to understand that those roads, those bridges, the highways, the electrical infrastructure, the oil and gas infrastructure, our ports and harbors, these are all vital to our world commerce.
