Friday, April 20th, 2018Already a marvel of 20th century engineering, the new Bayonne Bridge is now also a 21st century sensation. Since 1931, the iconic superstructure, formerly the world’s largest steel arched bridge, has spanned the Kill Van Kull, one of the most heavily traveled cargo-carrying waterways, accessing the port of New York and New Jersey. Engineering firms HDR and WSP USA joined forces to modernize the bridge and allow larger ships to cross under it. At the Engineering Excellence Awards Gala, hosted by ACEC on April 17th, Milestone 1 of the “Raising the Bayonne Bridge” project was awarded the highest honor of “Grand Conceptor.”

Monday, March 13th, 2017Spanning the picturesque Boca Grande pass, the swing bridge is the only structural link connecting Charlotte County to the barrier islands. Despite a rigorous maintenance program, the swing span’s operational reliability had become more difficult to maintain. Along with narrow travel lanes unsuited for 21st Century traffic, the low-lying bridge and its substructure was at risk of collapse from vessel impacts, and wave loading from coastal storm events.

Monday, April 11th, 201696fix was the largest single-season construction project in state history. Reconstruction of the seven-mile stretch of the 40-year-old freeway included the rehabilitation of 37 bridges, installation of LED lighting and storm sewers, and safety improvements. The $153 million project was completed early and under budget, and brought I-96 in line with current standards. Innovative technologies included visual modeling to gain public support for closing the freeway during construction and 3-D design model for fine-tuning paving work. The process saved taxpayer dollars, cut freeway closure time, and improved pavement quality and safety.
