Wednesday, January 15th, 2014DC Water’s Contractor (SKJD) will utilize an innovative ground freezing technology to improve ground condition in advance of shaft, adit and near surface construction of the First Street Tunnel Project. By creating a natural gas generated closed loop brine system, the ground will be stabilized in advance of excavation. Ground Freezing ensures that the required excavation in the four construction staging areas for this important project will be fully stabilized.

How has the 2008 Economic Crisis impacted the design, financing, and construction of highway public–private partnership (PPP or P3) projects in the United States? In December 2007, on the eve of the economic crisis, the Virginia legislature approved a P3 to construct a 14-mile (22.5 km) high occupancy toll (HOT) road (the 495 Express Lanes) to alleviate heavy traffic on the Capital Beltway around Washington, DC. This case study looks at the impact the 2008 Economic Crisis and associated economic challenges between 2008 and 2012 had on this project and considers what governments and other stakeholders should be aware of when implementing P3s during adverse economic times.
Washington, DC: Streetcar Construction
Thursday, December 19th, 2013For the last several months, DDOT and the streetcar team have been busy at work along H Street and Benning Road on the last leg of streetcar construction. Right now the team is performing final design and construction for several areas of the project, including streetcar turnarounds, the Car Barn Training Center, pole and overhead wire installation, track installation for turnarounds, pocket tracks, and final roadway.
