The unfortunate truth is that surveying the history of data breaches exposes the fact that much of the information has been compromised because professionals haven’t applied the core elements of a strong cybersecurity protocol. For infrastructure to remain safe, organizations and individuals within the field must be educated and apply the correct processes to ensure that accidental leaks become a thing of the past.

In the past you had to be physically here to damage something, but in today’s connected world there are people who want to do us harm, and that harm in the 21st century doesn’t necessarily come via an army or a ship or a tank, it comes through electronic warfare, through cyber warfare. Europe has been experiencing that with ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and elsewhere called asymmetric or hybrid warfare, and it’s something that we ought to be talking about in the same sentence that we mention “Smart Grid” or any other type of smart technology.

Over the last decade, hacking and cybercrime have evolved from an inconvenient nuisance to a persistent and ominous threat. Hardly a day goes by without news of a major breach somewhere in the world, often to the tune of millions of dollars or involving highly sensitive data and intellectual property. What’s more, the control of energy systems, transportation networks and a growing swath of other types of infrastructure are increasingly at risk for cyberattacks and cyberterrorism.

Today, U.S. port facilities rely as much upon networked computer and control systems as they do upon stevedores to ensure the flow of maritime commerce that the economy, homeland, and national security depend upon. Yet, unlike other sectors of critical infrastructure, little attention has been paid to the networked systems that undergird port operations. No cybersecurity standards have been promulgated for U.S. ports, nor has the U.S. Coast Guard, the lead federal agency for maritime security, been granted cybersecurity authorities to regulate ports or other areas of maritime critical infrastructure.
