Los Angeles is home to year-round sunshine and an entrepreneurial spirit. As such, it has the potential to be the national leader in solar power and clean energy jobs. Further, thanks to an abundance of training programs, Los Angeles boasts a trained workforce ready for jobs in solar installation, design, sales and more. Unfortunately, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LA DWP) has failed to take advantage of the tremendous environmental and economic potential that solar power offers our region. As a result, Los Angeles has unwittingly forfeited significant opportunities to take leadership in this growing industry, meet the renewable energy goals mandated by state law, and create thousands of local jobs.

Investments to preserve transportation systems simply have not kept pace with the demands on them, and this underfunding – decade after decade – has led to the decay of one of the state’s greatest assets. Failing to adequately invest in the restoration of California’s roads,
highways, bridges, airports, seaports, railways, border crossings, and public transit infrastructure will lead to further decay and a deterioration of service from which it may take many years to recover. The future of the state’s economy and our quality of life depend on a transportation system that is safe and reliable, and which moves people and goods efficiently

LOS ANGELES COUNTY BICYCLE COALITION
There are many high-density urban areas in Los Angeles County with large numbers of transit -dependent residents and high rates of walking and bicycle usage, yet they tend to contain much fewer, if any, bicycle facilities. Not surprisingly, data extrapolated from the TIMS database created by SafeTrec at UC Berkeley shows disproportionately higher concentrations of pedestrian and bicycle crashes in low-income areas than in more affluent areas.

Bridge Builders – Al Zampa Bridge, CA

In 2003, the longest suspension bridge in the U.S. since the Verrazano Narrows Bridge spanned the Hudson River nearly 40 years before, was completed. History was made when the bridge was named for a construction worker—Al Zampa—who, as an iron worker, had helped construct the original Carquinez Bridge, and had worked on the Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge and every other bridge spanning the San Francisco Bay. Meet Al Zampa’s son and grandsons, all iron workers, as well as numerous other workers who helped build the Al Zampa bridge.

California’s Bullet Train — On the Road to Bankruptcy

For California’s high-speed rail boosters including their chief cheerleader, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, the month of May must have felt like a month from hell. First came a scathing report by California legislature’s fiscal watchdog, the non-partisan Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO), questioning the rail authority’s unrealistic cost estimates and its decision to build the first $5.5 billion segment in the sparsely populated Central Valley between Borden and Corcoran.
