Changing cultural preferences for transportation are evident from both younger (millennials) and older generations (baby boomers). A large portion of these populations express a desire to live in communities that are bikeable, walkable and have transit.

With the first wave of the Baby Boom Generation turning 65 in 2011, the number of older Americans and their share of the population will begin to grow significantly in the coming years. And as this generation continues to age and grow, it will demand a level of mobility and an active lifestyle that far outpaces any of America’s previous generations.
AMERICAN PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION ASSOCIATION
Rapid growth in the number of older people in the United States during the coming decades will lead to greatly increased needs for expanded and enhanced public transportation services. This report: a) identifies the range of actions that will be needed to expand mobility options for older people, including accessible public transportation services; b) quantifies the demand for these public transportation services; and c) estimates the funding that will be needed to provide them.
