Balancing Airport Stormwater and Bird Hazard Management

Airports have historically incorporated BMPs to comply with these requirements, such as stormwater detention ponds and vegetated swales, many of which have exposed open water, vegetation, and other design characteristics that attract wildlife. Research shows that 10 of the 15 bird species most hazardous to aircraft are highly attracted to these types of water features (DeVault et al. 2011)…To address this hazardous wildlife concern, the FAA has established guidelines for airport stormwater management to provide for aircraft safety.

New York City: Rail Service for LaGuardia Airport (Finally)

New York City’s airports will get a major facelift with Governor Andrew Cuomo’s 2015 Opportunity Agenda.

The announcement doesn’t come as a surprise, given that LaGuardia recently suffered some very public infrastructure criticisms. Add to that over $5 billion in one-off legal settlements from Wall Street recently awarded to New York State, and you’ve got a perfect recipe for infrastructure investment.

Aviation is a key sector in the world economy. It both drives and supports global economic growth. On a global level the aviation market was boosted by strong growth in emerging markets, transporting approximately 3.1 billion people and 49.3 million tonnes of cargo according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in 2013. Airports Council International (ACI) figures show 4.6% growth in passengers compared with 2.4% growth in global GDP, reflecting the continued economic recovery after the financial and economic crises of 2008-2009. For air navigation services (ANS) the key measures of activity are Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) flights, IFR flight hours and IFR airport movements.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations at Airport Parking Facilities

Purchases of EVs are increasing throughout the United States, with the West Coast states accounting for a disproportionately high number of EVs on the road. Research undertaken for this report has shown that at least 37 airports in the United States are providing EV charging stations, most commonly in short-term or long-term parking facilities, and usually with no additional charging fee to customers. None of the airport sponsors interviewed reported the installation process as being particularly onerous, especially if up-front costs were alleviated by grants and if the existing electrical infrastructure was adequate to support the EV charger installation.

The Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) is a critical infrastructure project that will transform the Nation’s air traffic management from ground-based radar to a satellite-based system with the goals of improving safety, meeting the expected demands for increased capacity, and improving efficiency. It is also FAA’s most complex modernization effort to date and will require multibillion-dollar investments from both the Federal Government and airspace users to successfully implement. However, since its inception a decade ago, FAA’s progress in implementing NextGen has not met the expectations of Congress and industry stakeholders, and key modernization efforts have experienced significant cost increases and schedule delays.
