America’s Transportation Awards Top 10 Project Profile: Wyoming DOT

Tuesday, October 7th, 2014

Wyoming Department of Transportation’s $146.2 million Togwottee Trail to Yellowstone project increased safety and mobility by upgrading a 50-year-old road on a major route leading to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. New under-crossings were built so wildlife and snowmobilers can pass under the highway safely. New shoulders, passing lanes, and upgraded bridges and parking facilities allow a safe trip through some of America’s most beautiful scenery. Wyoming Department of Transportation’s Togwottee Trail to Yellowstone project was recognized as a Regional Winner in the 2014 America’s Transportation Awards competition and it is also a Top 10 finalist, competing for the National Grand Prize and the People’s Choice Award. The infographic reveals a slew of alarming facts and predictions centering on the depletion of MAP-21 funding by Fall of 2014, which will lead to states being responsible for 100% of transportation funding. Did you know that, already, 45% of Americans don’t have access to transit? Did you know that 1 in 4 of our bridges is in need of significant repair? While states have come up with some viable funding mechanisms of their own, it’s clearly time for the Fed to step in and replenish this vital source of transportation funding.

The GROW AMERICA Act: Response from the Infra Community

On Friday, May 2, the Obama Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation released the GROW AMERICA Act, a $300-billion transportation bill aiming to provide comprehensive solutions to our nation’s transportation woes. According to the GROW AMERICA fact sheet. Despite the bill’s cumbersome acronym (Generating Renewal, Opportunity, and Work with Accelerated Mobility, Efficiency, and Rebuilding of Infrastructure and Communities throughout America) the bill promises to resolve a slew of nagging transportation problems, from environmental impact to financing.

Mixed Reactions to Obama’s New $300 Billion Transportation Bill

President Obama in St. Paul

On February 26, President Obama climbed the steps of St. Paul, MN’s Union Depot train station to announce his new vision for transportation funding. The bill includes a competition for $600 million in transportation dollars, and a four-year surface transportation reauthorization to the tune of $300 billion.

Stakeholders on both sides of the fence have been quick to form opinions, and the fate of the bill remains uncertain–though most agree that action is urgently needed. Selected reactions from the transportation community are excerpted below.
