U.S. News and World Report recently released a comprehensive list of the Best States for Infrastructure.
The list focuses on three key items: energy, transportation and internet. These infrastructure rankings are part of a series of similar lists authored by the same organization, including Best States Overall, Health Care Rankings and Economy Rankings.
According to Brian Kelly, editor and chief content officer at U.S. News, “The value of a ranking like this is we use our judgment to say, it’s not just one thing that makes a state great. It’s a combination of things.”
Oregon, for example, leads the pack in the Infrastructure list, but drops to #19 overall, pulled down by lower government, crime and opportunity rankings. Rounding out the bottom of the Infrastructure list is Mississippi, which ranks in the bottom five across the board (with the exception of Crime, where they’re at #21).
In calculating the Overall Best States, U.S. News and World Report place greater weight on healthcare and education, but nearly the same on infrastructure. Even in assigning weightings, they did their homework: the numbers are based on a national survey asking respondents to prioritize different topics.
