About the Sakonnet River Bridge Project
“Construction is well underway on a $163.7 million project to replace the aging Sakonnet River Bridge, which carries Route 24 between Tiverton and Portsmouth. The bridge currently has a posted weight of limit of 18 tons, requiring trucks, buses, and other large vehicles to use lengthy detours in the area.
In April 2009, RIDOT broke ground on the new bridge project, which is set for completion in 2013. The bridge is expected to be open to traffic earlier, in mid-2012.” – Rhose Island Department of Transportation
