Crews spent Oct. 15-17, 2011, installing 24 huge girders above State Route 520 in Medina, Wash., as part of a new overpass that will have a park and ride, transit access, landscaping and paths. Shorter 48-ton girders now span the eastbound lanes and longer, 106-ton girders span the westbound lanes. Girders were trucked north on Interstate 405 from Tacoma and crews installed an average of one girder per hour.
The Washington State Department of Transportation awarded the $306 million project to design-build contractor Eastside Corridor Constructors. The project widens SR 520 from four to six lanes from Medina to Bellevue and includes rebuilding interchanges, installing fish-friendly culverts, and building highway lids and transit stops in the center of the highway.
