This video shows the break-through of a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) for Tunnel “A” of the East Side Access project in Long Island City, Queens. It finished its drive on 12/26/2011 when it reached its receiving pit destination as seen in this video. Tunnel “A” will eventually convey trains westbound into the LIRR’s new Grand Central Terminal, GCT.
This TBM began its work on August 10, 2011, mining through hard rock, boulders, gravel, sand and clay. It will now be disassembled, loaded onto flat bed trucks and transported to 29-76 Northern Boulevard in Long Island City, where it will be re-assembled and again begin mining Tunnel “D” which will carry trains eastbound from the new Grand Central Terminal. Upon completion of ESA there will be four new tunnels providing service to GCT. – LIRR2010 on YouTube
