The Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act contains provisions for public transportation programs, extension of SAFETEA-LU, and federal aid for highways.
John Horsley, Executive Director, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials:
“Now … we will focus on moving forward with a transformational transportation authorization that will create jobs and build the infrastructure America needs for economic recovery and long-term prosperity.”
–Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chair, Senate Environment and Public Works Committee
“With $15 billion of investments, it unleashes tens of billions of dollars more in infrastructure – to build the infrastructure for the future in terms of how it unleashes funds from the highway trust fund.”
–Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), House Speaker
“One proven way to create good jobs in America is to build and maintain transportation infrastructure. By also authorizing the Highway Trust Fund through the end of 2010, this bill guarantees that states will be able to continue doing just that.”
–Ray LaHood, U.S. Secretary of Transportation
“This bill will ensure transportation projects can continue to move forward, and it creates incentives for businesses to hire more workers.”
–Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT)
“This is good news in the sense that funding is no longer on a month-to-month or short-term basis with threats of things being shut down.”
–Leslie Blakey, Executive Director, Coalition for America’s Gateways and Trade Corridors
